“Ever wondered what goes into drawing your favorite animated characters?” Now that voting has finished for the 96th Academy Awards, The Academy is getting back into promoting and featuring certain movies nominated for an Academy Award. Their latest video is “Drawn To The Moment” – it’s a 4 minute short film featuring various artists from a few of the Best Animated Movie nominees for a session where they draw their character(s) winning an Oscar. They probably asked Hayao Miyazaki to do this too, but I’m sure he said no. They ended up with: Jared Mathews, an animator on the Best Animated Short nominee Ninety-Five Senses; Joaquim Dos Santos & Justin K. Thompson two of the co-directors on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Pablo Berger, direct of the delightful movie Robot Dreams. They all talk about what makes their characters so unique while envisioning them winning an Oscar. I wish they got all of the filmmakers to do this. So much fun seeing them sketch it out, and discuss collaborating on ideas.
Intro to “Drawn to the Moment” from The Academy via YouTube: “Ever wondered what goes into drawing your favorite animated characters? Thompson, Pablo Berger, and Jared Mathews (animator on Ninety-Five Senses). The Academy Award-nominated movies from 2023 for Best Animated Feature include: Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Pixar & Pete Sohn’s Elemental, Nick Bruno & Troy Quane’s Nimona, Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams, and Sony & Joaquim Dos Santos & Kemp Powers & Justin K. Thompson’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. View all the nominees. The winners of the 96th Oscars will be announced on March 10th. All five of these nominated movies are worth a watch.
