“We are engaged in a life or death struggle against our own extinction.” Oh oh what do we have here?? IFC Films + Shudder have revealed the first official trailer for Humane, marking the feature directorial debut of Canadian photographer Caitlin Cronenberg. Yet another Cronenbrg getting into making horror films – yes she’s the daughter of David Cronenberg, and brother of fellow filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. Humane is a chilling dystopian satire opening in theaters first this April before it’s streaming on Shudder in the summer. In the wake of a catastrophic environmental collapse that is forcing humanity to shed 20% of its population (are we headed here?), a family dinner erupts into chaos when a father’s plan to enlist in the government’s new euthanasia program goes horribly awry. Set over one night at this home. The film stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, with Alanna Bale, and Sirena Gulamgaus. This looks like a very spicy thriller that will stir up some big conversations, and I like that it has a kooky satirical vibe. Also reminds me of the British sci-fi film Silent Night from a few years ago.
Here’s the official trailer (+ two posters) for Caitlin Cronenberg’s Humane, direct from IFC’s YouTube:
Caitlin Cronenberg’s film Humane takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children. Humane is directed by Canadian indie filmmaker Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of David Cronenberg, making her feature directorial debut after also directing a few other short films and a successful career as a photographer previously. The screenplay is written by and it’s also produced by Michael Sparaga. This hasn’t premiered at any film fests or elsewhere, as far as we know. IFC Films + Shudder will relase Caitlin Cronenberg’s Humane film in select US theaters starting on April 26th, 2024 this spring, then streaming on Shudder starting July 26th later this summer. Look any good?
