“A telescope is a time machine” IMAX has revealed an official trailer for a space documentary experience called Deep Sky, from the same director behind My Architect, The Price of Everything, and The Hunt for Planet B. “Admire the stars tonight, then make plans to journey through the cosmos and travel through time with the NASA James Webb Space Telescope in IMAX.” Coming to the big, BIG screen this fall. Directed by filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn, and narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams (hear her in this trailer), Deep Sky is an immersive experience sharing some of the astonishing images taken by this device. This inspiring film explores the $10 billion JWST’s engineering and construction process, historic Dec. 25, 2021 launch, and the release of its first full-color, galaxy-sprinkled images on July 12, 2022 witnessed by the entire planet. This isn’t the only film about the new telescope – there’s also Netflix’s doc Unknown: Cosmic Time Machine, and a few others out there. This trailer is really over-selling this, as if we’re going to get these answers from a telescope. I love JWST but this intro is a bit too much. Anyone interested in going to watch?
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Nathaniel Kahn’s doc Deep Sky, direct from IMAX’s YouTube:
Deep Sky brings the awe-inspiring images captured by NASA’s Webb Telescope to IMAX — taking audiences on a journey to the beginning of time and space, to never-before-seen cosmic landscapes, and to recently discovered exoplanets, planets around other stars. Follows the high-stakes global mission to build JWST and to launch it into orbit one-million miles from Earth, in an attempt to answer questions that have haunted us since the beginning of time: Where did we come from? How did the universe begin? Are we alone? 13 billion years in the making, Deep Sky reveals the universe as we have never seen it before; immersing audiences in the stunning pictures beamed back to earth by NASA’s spectacular new telescope — and capturing their vast beauty at a scale that can only be experienced on the giant IMAX screen. Deep Sky is directed by American doc writer / producer / filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn, director of the docs My Architect, Earth 2050: The Future of Energy, The Dark Side of the Sun, The Price of Everything, and The Hunt for Planet B previously. Produced by Bonnie Hlinomaz & Nathaniel Kahn. IMAX will debut the Deep Sky doc in select IMAX theaters + in museums around the world starting in October 20th, 2023 this fall.
