“It was never about the plays, it was about being with the people who ‘get’ you.” Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a raunchy New York City romantic comedy film called Players, the latest from filmmaker Trish Sie (of Pitch Perfect 3, The Sleepover, Sitting in Bars with Cake). This is indeed about the “player” culture of super hot hookups and one-night-stands, where a woman helps guys with “plays” until he realizes he wants more than just one-night-stands. Of course, this is the same story they’ve been telling for decades. New York sportswriter Mack has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with her friends, but when she unexpectedly falls for one of her high society targets, she must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to “playing for keeps.” What a pitch. Gina Rodriguez stars as Mack, along with Damon Wayans Jr., Joel Courtney, Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Ego Nwodim, Marin Hinkle, and Tom Ellis. This is the kind of raunchy comedy that used to be a big studio movie, now it’s streaming on Netflix in February.
Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Trish Sie’s Players, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:
New York sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship from a “play”. However, when Mack unexpectedly falls for her latest target, charming war correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis), she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps. Players is directed by American filmmaker Trish Sie, director of the films Pitch Perfect 3, The Sleepover, and Sitting in Bars with Cake previously, plus many music videos and short films. The screenplay is written by Whit Anderson (a writer on the series “Allegiance”, “Daredevil”, “Ozark”). Produced by Ross M. Dinerstein, Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, and Ryan Christians. Netflix will debut Trish Sie’s Players streaming on Netflix starting February 14th, 2024, on Valentine’s Day, this winter. Who wants to watch?
