“It takes culture and memory to shape one’s taste.” Gaumont in France has revealed the first official French trailer for the highly acclaimed food film known as La Passion de Dodin Bouffant. And yes, the trailer has English subtitles so everyone can enjoy it. “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant“, as it is known in French, also has two other English titles: The Pot au Feu and/or The Taste of Things (it’s the official US release title to look for). It premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, including my own, already proclaiming it as one of the best food films ever made. Juliette Binoche stars as Eugénie, an outstanding cook, who has worked for the famous gastronome Dodin Bouffant (as played by Benoît Magimel) for 20 years. However, Eugénie, eager for her own freedom, has never wanted to marry Dodin. So Dodin decides to do something he’s never done before: cook for her. The small cast includes Bonnie Chagneau Ravoire, Galatéa Bellugi, and Sarah Adler. I adore this film! It’s wonderful! And all the food is so spectacular and looks so delicious. It’s next playing at the New York + London Film Festivals this fall before hitting theaters.
Here’s the first French trailer (+ poster) for Anh Hung Tran’s The Taste of Things, direct from YouTube:
The film simmers in the intimate relationship between Eugenie, an exquisitely esteemed cook, and Dodin Bouffant, the gourmet she has been working for over the last 20 years. Growing fonder of one another, their bond turns into a romance and gives rise to many delicious dishes that impress even the world’s most illustrious chefs. When Dodin is faced with Eugenie’s reluctance to commit to him, he decides to start cooking for her. The Taste of Things, also known as La Passion de Dodin Bouffant in French or The Pot au Feu, is both written and directed by acclaimed Vietnamese-French filmmaker Anh Hung Tran, director of the films The Scent of Green Papaya, Cyclo, The Vertical Ray of the Sun, I Come with the Rain, Norwegian Wood, and Eternity previously. Produced by Olivier Delbosc. This initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition earlier this year (read our review) where it won the Best Director Prize at the end. The film is set to open in French cinemas starting on November 8th, 2023 this fall. IFC Films will then release The Taste of Things in the US sometime later this fall as well – stay tuned. Who’s in?
