“Food is a very obvious & central way to wield power.” Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for The Grab, a fascinating documentary film from Blackflish filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite. This is one of these films that “they” (the government, powerful people, etc) don’t want you to see. They don’t want you to know what’s really going, who is doing it, what is quietly happening. An investigative journalist uncovers the money, influence, and alarming rationale behind covert efforts to control the most vital resource on the planet – food. The Grab is a global thriller about hard-hitting journalism from the Center for Investigative Reporting combined with compelling character-driven storytelling from director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, taking you around the globe to reveal one of the world’s biggest and least known threats. It’s a look at who (and why) powerful nations are taking over control of food and water worldwide. It’s scary and eye-opening and alarming. The film first premiered in 2022 at the Toronto Film Festival but has taken a few years to get properly released. I saw this back then and it has always been stuck in my mind since – a must watch doc.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s doc The Grab, direct from YouTube:
“My last documentary, Blackfish, took the wind out of me. The film struck a nerve and as exciting as that was, it was also overwhelming and made me realize how careful we have to be when we choose our projects. After Blackfish, I took a short break from documentary film. I had encountered plenty of films I wanted to do, but very few that I needed to do. Until now. The Grab is an investigative thriller that aims to explain the world, to expose the “business as usual” cracks, to break down some darkly powerful inner-workings while focusing on the humans who absorb every punch in real time. In a time where the world can feel confusing and dim, our hope is that this 6-year investigative deep dive of a film can help explain, unite, galvanize and entertain people from all walks of life and from all corners of the world.” –Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite
Quietly and seemingly out of sight, governments, private investors and mercenaries are working to seize food and water resources at the expense of entire populations. These groups are establishing themselves as the new OPEC, where all the future world powers will be those who control not oil – but food. And it’s all beginning to bubble to the surface in real time. Global food prices have hit an all-time high, threatening chaos and violence. Meanwhile China, Russia, the UAE, and Wall Street are just a few of the players strategizing within this shocking, shifting geopolitical landscape. The Grab is directed by the American producer / filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director of the acclaimed doc film Blackfish previously, plus the films Megan Leavey, Our Friend, and this year’s I.S.S. thriller, and the doc series “Children of the Underground”. It’s produced by Cowperthwaite, Blye Pagon Faust, Nathan Halverson, Amanda Pike, Nicole Rocklin. This initially premiered at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival. Magnolia Pictures will debut The Grab in select US theaters on June 14th, 2024. For more info, visit the film’s official site. Intrigued to watch?
