“Everything will happen.” Utopia has revealed the trailer for an indie gem from Cannes this year called The Sweet East, the new film from indie cinematographer / filmmaker Sean Price Williams. It premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, then went on to play at the Karlovy Vary, Melbourne, London, New York, Ghent, and Philadelphia Film Festivals this year. Here’s the intro: “The mental, social & political disarray of the United States, filmed like a game of hopscotch or a variation on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. High school student Lillian runs away on a school trip and, through a series of encounters, traverses the spectrum of contemporary radicalism & madness, from white supremacists to Islamic radicals, from neo-punks to woke avant-gardists.” Talia Ryder stars as Lillian, with an eccentric ensemble cast featuring Earl Cave, Simon Rex, Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy O. Harris, Jacob Elordi, Rish Shah, Gibby Haynes, and Jack Irv. I saw this in Cannes and it’s quite good, a grainy, hazy, trippy journey through the craziest parts of America. This is a funky trailer that absolutely captures the actual vibe of this unique film.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Sean Price Williams’ The Sweet East, direct from YouTube:
The Sweet East is a picaresque journey through the cities and woods of the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Lillian (Talia Ryder), a high school senior from South Carolina, gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C. Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured road trip in search of America. Along the way, she falls in with a variety of strange factions, each living out their own alternative realities in our present day world. The Sweet East is directed by American indie cinematographer / filmmaker Sean Price Williams, making his feature directorial debut after a few other short films previously, and also a co-director on Eyes Find Eyes (2011). The screenplay is written by Nick Pinkerton. Produced by Craig Butta, Alex Coco, Alex Ross Perry. This initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar. Utopia will debut The Sweet East in select US theaters (NY only) starting December 1st, 2023 this fall. With a special roadshow to follow in select cities with cast & crew – in theaters nationwide January 2024. For more details, visit the film’s official site.
