“Bravery is real. Out here, bad people become good.” Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Woods Are Real, made by filmmaker Alix Lambert. This seems to be a shoddy “liberals are dumb!” film made by American conservatives, which is not surprising to see nowadays but it also doesn’t have much of anything interesting to say either… The film is described as a “folk horror twist” on the story of Job from the Bible. Joba and Quincy are a wealthy Brooklyn couple who value charity above all. But when a friend returns from a country pilgrimage to challenge their bleeding hearts, they accept an invitation that will change their lives forever. They end up trapped in the woods with everything taken from them… Starring Matt Dellapina and Chinasa Ogbuagu as Joba and Quincy, with Campbell Scott as The Woodsman, Nick Westrate, Jeffrey Omura, Kathleen McElfresh, Teresa Avia Lim, & Laura Esposito. This looks so obnoxiously cheesy and pretentious, I doubt anyone will even care to see it.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Alix Lambert’s The Woods Are Real, direct from YouTube:
Joba and Quincy are a privileged, fiercely progressive Brooklyn couple – they buy the right things and march for every just cause. But when their friend, Caleb, returns from a country pilgrimage challenging their bleeding liberal hearts, Quincy is initially skeptical. But when Joba insists they take up an invitation to the same off-grid spot, they are met by a kitschy cabin in the woods peppered with analog devices of a simpler age: a rotary phone, religious iconography, an Edison machine. When a record plays a menacing message, Joba and Quincy rapidly learn that their bank accounts have been drained, their digital records erased, and their family businesses are collapsing. They try to flee, but only grow more enveloped by the woods. With nothing left but the clothes on their backs, they find themselves trapped in a spiritual test of survival in this folk horror twist on the story of Job. The Woods Are Real is directed by indie filmmaker Alix Lambert, director of Bayou Blue, Mentor, Obits, and many other short film projects previously. The screenplay is by Matt Dellapina and Sean Christopher Lewis. This premiered at the 2023 The Lower East Side Film Festival last year. Gravitas will debut The Woods Are Real direct-to-VOD on March 12th, 2024.
