“The authority of the bible is at stake.” An official trailer is out for an important documentary film titled in full 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture. After a festival run that captured over 20 awards including the Audience Award at the 2022 DOC NYC Film Festival, this will be out in theaters starting this December. Made by filmmaker Sharon “Rocky” Roggio, 1946 is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. The film chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen documents found in archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. With commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors, including the personal stories of the film’s creators, 1946 is at once challenging, enlightening, and inspiring. While other doc films have been successful in their attempt to treat the symptom of homophobia in the church, 1946 is working to diagnose and treat the disease – Biblical Literalism. Yes, it is meant to be provocative and clear – starting an important conversation that needs to be had. Hopefully this film will changes things.

“Biblical literalism has led to the marginalization of innumerable human beings, not just within the LGBTQIA+ community. I hope this film starts the necessary conversations that rids this bad theology from the church and from our homes,” said Roggio. “We must address this mistake with compassion and consideration as often our loved ones are our oppressors and the perpetrators of persecution because of this misinformation. This isn’t just a film for me. It’s an act of mercy, of justice, and of empathy, not only for those involved in the creation of the film, but for those we interviewed, for the audience who will watch it, and for myself as well. It’s an act of Grace.” –Director Sharon Roggio
In the documentary film 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture, director Sharon Roggio combines personal experiences with thrilling historical exploration to uncover one of the greatest mysteries of our time, forever shifting our understanding of the Bible. The film follows the story of tireless researchers, Kathy Baldock & Ed Oxford, who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation in the biblical text. They find that the Revised Standard Version, published in 1946 was the first time the word “homosexual” appeared in any Bible – in any translation. While so much of the film’s content is rooted in research and scholarship, the heartbeat of the film are all of the personal stories of its creators. The documentary also chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing revelations, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ bias.
