“Everyone on the movie collectively owns the movie.” A24 has unveiled another beautiful promo featurette for Sing Sing, directed by filmmaker Greg Kwedar. This initially premiered at last year’s 2023 Toronto Film Festival to rave reviews, with many critics calling it one of the best of the fest. It’s ready to open in art house theaters starting in July and will expand into more cities in August – check your local listings. Oscar nominee Colman Domingo stars in a rapturous role as Divine G – imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, he finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men, including a wary newcomer – in this “stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art,” starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors. Which makes a very big difference. Based on the real-life arts rehabilitation programme founded at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, Kwedar’s film follows a troupe of incarcerated actors working on a play. Also starring Clarence Maclin, Sean San Jose, and Paul Raci. This is such a lovely video focusing on how the film is an expression of brotherhood, a connection of everyone who contributed to making it. (Here’s the full trailer.) I cannot wait to watch this.

Full synopsis from TIFF: “A theatre troupe finds escape from the realities of incarceration through the creativity of putting on a play in this film based on a real-life rehabilitation programme and featuring a cast that includes formerly incarcerated actors… Every six months, the men gather in a circle of chairs, often looking to Divine G (Colman Domingo) to help decide their next play. When he recruits a new member called Divine Eye (Clarence Maclin), he gets more than he bargained for. The group’s dynamic begins to shift as Divine Eye suggests they do a comedy for the first time, prompting the men to throw out a jumble of wild ideas — from pirate ships to Roman gladiators to Old West gunfights. Flustered at first, Divine G quickly starts to see Divine Eye’s discomfort with the vulnerability required for what seems like a silly pursuit. While planning for his own clemency hearing, he tries to forge a connection with Eye, as the men collectively unpack the pain of their experience while undergoing the joy and escape of creativity.” 🎭
Sing Sing is directed by up-and-coming writer / producer / filmmaker Greg Kwedar, making his second feature film after directing Transpecos previously, plus many short films and other projects. The screenplay is written by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar; from a story by Clarence Maclin. Based on the play titled “Breakin’ The Mummy’s Code” by Brent Buell; and based on the article: “The Sing Sing Follies” written by John H. Richardson. It’s produced by Monique Walton, Clint Bentley, and Greg Kwedar. The film initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year. A24 will debut Greg Kewdar’s Sing Sing in select US theaters starting July 12th 2024, with more cities nationwide beginning on August 1st. Who’s intrigued?
