“When you say ‘a filmmaker’ – a lot of people think of directors, writers, producers, and stars… But Ray is a filmmaker, Ray is a storyteller.” Some of you may have noticed that Marvel & 20th Century’s multiverse mash-up movie Deadpool & Wolverine ends with a tribute saying “In Memory of Raymond Chan.” So who was he? Well, now everyone can learn a bit more about him. Raymond Chan, best known as Ray by those who worked with him, was an acclaimed art director & production designer for Marvel Studios. His first credit for Marvel was on Thor: The Dark World in 2013. In the video, producer Kevin Feige states that he went on to work on 10 movies in total for them, including the epic Avengers: Endgame two-parter as the supervising art director. He was also art director on Alien vs. Predator and Children of Men before joining the MCU. Unfortunately Ray passed away in April earlier this year at the age of 56 near his home in Wales, which is why they dedicated Deadpool & Wolverine to him. This is a lovely video tribute to Ray from Marvel.
Raymond Chan was born in the UK and raised by his parents originally from Hong Kong. He lived in Wales and worked on a lot of Marvel productions that filmed in the UK. His 10 MCU credits include (mainly as art director): Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Doctor Strange (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) & Avengers: Endgame (2019). After all this, he then moved to the role of production designer and worked on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series (2021), Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), and also the non-MCU movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023). He also worked on Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). Other credits include National Treasure, Nanny McPhee, Children of Men, Blood Diamond, Robin Hood, and Knight and Day. His unfortunate passing was reported in the news in April earlier in the year. Marvel’s note in the video: “Thank you Ray Chan. ❤️ Your passion and artistry really did create the MCU.”
