“Why can’t you go skate at the skatepark instead?” Ah yes, the frustrating question skateboarders are asked day after day. This clever short titled SPOTS: A Way of Seeing addresses that question with thoughtful scientific analysis. Spots is a short film from skateboarder / filmmaker Daniel Paese, taking a close look at the “spots” skaters choose and what makes them so appealing. It’s a visual presentation by Paese’s research facility delving into the phenomena of “SPOTS” – showing everyone why they love to skate around on the “wild” architecture of the streets… “The world of naturally occurring spots is so vast and complex, that it is virtually impossible to catalog and define in its entirety.” Starring Avery Miller, Max Wheeler, Alex Kehoe, Austin Garner, Chris Landers. I dig everything about this! The narration is fun, the editing is (ahem) spot on, the shots are clean. It really does feel like I learned something watching this. Check it out! Enjoy below.
Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this one. Intro via Vimeo: “A fictionalized research group explores the mystery behind why many skateboarders chose the streets over the skate park, and takes a granular, but surprisingly unscientific look at the relationship skateboarders have with their own habitat.” Spots: A Way of Seeing is a short film created and written and directed and shot and edited by filmmaker Daniel Paese originally from St. Louis, Missouri – you can view more of his work on his Vimeo page and visit his official website. With additional filming by Brandon Yuenger. And with a score also by Daniel Paese. Supported by Place Magazine. “I didn’t quite know what that film would be about, but it hit me while driving around in my car looking for spots. I always really enjoyed searching for spots and so that is how the idea started.” For more info, head to Vimeo or read an interview on Place.tv. To watch more shorts, click here. Your thoughts?
